| NPA stages triple attack in Compostela Valley |

| [Sun Star] New People's Army (NPA) militants simultaneously attacked and ransacked three areas in Monkayo, Compostela Valley. Attacked were the mining compound of Monkayo Mayor Manuel Brillantes Jr. and the Philippine army detachment of the 25th Infantry Battalion. A security guard at the mining site and a militiaman acting as the mayor's private security were killed in the twin attacks. Battalion commander Colonel Francis Sibal said the militants were under Front Committee 3 led by Ka Lope. He said the militants separated into three groups, with one attacking the mining compound, another harassing the army detachment, while a third was posted at a bridge where possible government reinforcement would pass by. About 20 NPA guerrillas attacked the army base, resulting in a 20-minute clash. At around 11 p.m., about 30 militants also blocked a road along the Davao-Butuan road in Montevista, Compostela Valley. |
