Speaking on the fourth anniversary of the civil war, Mr Kerry said the conflict was "one of the worst tragedies any of us have seen".

He said the US was pushing President Assad to begin negotiations again after two previous rounds of talks collapsed.

Just for grins and chuckles let's say that Assad croaks from some natural cause. What happens then?

Is there a absolute free for all among the current factions? Does ISIS get much stronger? Do the Persians come in overtly to take control? Would there be enough pop-corn?
