US Deploys A-10s to Europe Amid Debate to Arm Ukraine
2015-02-12
The top NATO commander, Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, last week warned that any action the U.S. or other Western nations take "could trigger a more strident reaction from Russia," even while acknowledging that Russia continues to supply separatists on the border with heavy, state-of-the-art weapons, air defenses and fighters, according to an article by The Associated Press.
Yet another deployment for an "obsolete" aircraft. / sarc

#9  A couple of A-10s flying low-level gun runs need top cover by interceptors. They also need AWACS or Wild Weasel support to keep an eye on AA missile threats. The A-10 has some pretty good flare packages to confuse heat-seeking missiles.

To some extent, you put them in harms way to draw fire - and then make sure that anyone who takes a shot learns the steep price they pay for that action.

#8  I am curious tho, could an A-10 be mated with the catapults of the New Jersey class BBs? Combining 16" guns with 4 cat launched A-10s is a no brainer. An updated Wampanoag class frigate would supply the necessary escort.

#7  Sidewinders? Dang, it is indeed Rantburgs own.

#6  An A-10 is not nearly as easy to engage as many think. It'll likely be armed with a couple of Sidewinders and no fighter pilot in his right mind is going to try a gun attack against a far more maneuverable aircraft, down in the grass, that is armed with a gun that outranges his own by a large margin.

#5  A-10 has its role, but this is a bit outside of it. Need Air Superiority/Supremacy first, or at least the ability to SEAD and sanitize the flight corridors

#4  It's like Gorge Costanza has taken over the gubmint. Everything it does is the oppostite of what makes sense.

#3  Sending A10's in is just dumb. Russians have truckloads of manpads that can kill this aircraft, while ISIS is limited in capability. Bad call, unless they are trying to show the aircrafts limitations...

#2  Hopefully they don't deploy it into harm's way to prove a point.

#1  Gotta wonder about this, A10 in a high air to air threat environment is not that good of a move. Send F22 and we will know they're serious
