[DAWN] PAKISTAN is going downhill. This means nothing to the corrupt who rule it. They fight tooth and claw against any attempt to save Pakistain. There is one exception. He raised expectations to fever pitch. He is honest and sincere, but politically naive. He wasted opportunities. He could still become prime minister. Unfortunately, he might not deliver much. Nevertheless, his social contributions have been very significant and politically unmotivated.

There is a long list of challenges threatening the country. None of them are being seriously tackled. Atrocities show no sign of ending. They are certain to get worse with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
hovering in the wings while the exit plans of the thieving elite are constantly updated. The roots of our national condition are carefully nourished. They sustain our ruling establishment.

Elected offices of public trust are generally considered God's beneficence for personal and family enrichment. Grateful beneficiaries offer nawafil, qurbani and sadaqaat instead of performing their bounden duties with due diligence. Unsurprisingly, Pakistain is the worst governed country in South Asia which is one of the poorest governed regions of the world. It is caught in a fatally corrupt institutional and political trap.

Few may starve in Pakistain. Those who do in faraway places like Thar or Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
generally do so quietly and invisibly. Many thousands drown in floods and die in earthquakes without their devastated families creating too much fuss. Having voted for energy promises the people put up without fans in summer or heating in winter. They get agitated when they see their children suffer and die from a plethora of preventable causes. But they do not unduly disturb their uncaring leaders. They keep voting for them.
