Young Egyptian woman shot dead in Alexandria
2015-01-24
[Iran Press TV] A young woman has been shot and killed during an anti-government protest in Egypt's second city of Alexandria.

According to an Egyptian security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the 18-year-old female protester was killed and her mother suffered wounds during the demonstration after Friday Prayers in the Mediterranean city.

Egyptian soldiers targeted the victim and her mother with birdshot, the official said, adding that 30 others were detained during the protest.

On Thursday, scuffles broke out between Egyptian security forces and a group of demonstrators at Talaat Harb Square, which is located near the iconic Liberation Square, in the capital, Cairo.

Also on Wednesday, dozens of supporters of the Moslem Brüderbund staged a protest against the government of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, days before the anniversary of the country's 2011 revolution that brought an end to long-time dictator, Hosni Mubarak

's rule.

The protesters marched toward downtown Liberation Square, hollered poorly rhymed slogans against the government, and called for an end to the "military rule."

Security forces responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the crowd of protesters, of whom more than a dozen were tossed in the calaboose

Moslem Brüderbund supporters have vowed to continue weekly protests in the buildup to the fourth anniversary of the revolution.

In an election after Mubarak's ouster, the Moslem Brüderbund-backed Mohammed Morsi was elected president. Morsi was later ousted in a military coup led by former military ruler and current President el-Sisi in July 2013.
