| Stick shift prevents Paterson gunmen from stealing vehicle |

| [NORTHJERSEY] Two gunnies aborted their plan to steal a Paterson resident's vehicle in the 5th Ward on Thursday after they realized it had a stick-shift manual transmission that neither of them could operate, police said. The suspects still took the victim's wallet and jewelry, but they had to flee on foot because of their inability to drive a stick shift, said Sgt. Ronald Van Wolde. The incident happened at about 12:15 am on East 24th Street, between 17th and 18th avenues, police said. The 22-year-old victim had just parked his vehicle when the two suspects approached, one going to the driver's side door and the other to the passenger's side as they pulled handguns, police said. The gunman on the driver's side ordered the victim out of the car, but then the other suspect intervened, saying they could not steal the vehicle because of the stick shift, police said. The suspects then argued amongst themselves about whether to try to take the vehicle, before finally deciding against it, police said. They then ran off with the victim's belongings, police said. Both suspects were black men with Caribbean accents, police said. One man was about five-feet, six-inches tall and weighed about 300 pounds, police said. He answers to "Porky" or "Fats." Nah, that's "Slim"... He was wearing a grey jacket and dark pants. Big ones. The other suspect was about six-feet tall and weighed about 170 pounds, police said. He was wearing a black-and-white jacket and dark pants. |
