The Pope Says Nuclear Deterrence Is No Longer A Justifiable Doctrine
2014-12-10
"Nuclear deterrence and the threat of mutually assured destruction cannot be the basis for an ethics of fraternity and peaceful coexistence among peoples and states. The youth of today and tomorrow deserve far more…. Peace must be built on justice, socio-economic development, freedom, respect for fundamental human rights, the participation of all in public affairs and the building of trust between peoples."
He is beginning to sound like a Hillary-tard.

#21  Or Ben Franklin > "We have a Republic, Madame, iff we can keep it"!?

As for Nuke Deterrence ...

* DRUDGEREPORT > [Telegraph.UK] THIS NIGHT SKY TO REMEBER: A NEW COLD WAR MAY BEGIN NOT IN EUROPE [or anywhere else], BUT IN S-P-A-C-E.

"SPACE 1999"s MOONBASE ALPHA WAS SECRETLY THE ALDERAAN-DESTROYING DEATH STAR IN DISGUISE.

D *** NG IT, "IN S-P-A-C-E", LIKE MACHETE KILLS, STARRING MICHELLE "EAT PHOTONS, SPACE BITCHES"! RODRIGUEZ.

Yuuup, Amerika, clearly there is no ORBITSTRIKE, GLOBAL PROMPT STRIKE, or SPACE/STARSTRIKE here.

#20  When considering defense policy the Pope is really close to the last expert I'd consult. Just saying.

#19  #17 This was playing to the peanut gallery, not the real powers. After cracking down and tossing out so many of those crewcut missle-silo blood-splashing nuns sisters, I think he felt he had to throw a sop their way.

#16  Who tried to ban crossbows?

#15   The Church (IIRC) disapproved of bombing cities during WWII, not that either side paid much attention.

#14  How many divisions does the Pope have?

#13  Well, we knew that he'd be an Idealistic Pope, just not that Francis would wear a blindfold and earplugs made out of Idealism.

#10  He's preaching to the choir. Let him give this sermon in places like Moscow, Peking and Tehran.

#9  Nuclear deterrence worked for a long time. If one is dealing with a death cult whose highest aspiration is to send their kitties off to be suicide bombers, nuclear weapons use may fit into their death wishes and religion. However, have we tried nuclear deterrence (threats) as a part of a negotiating strategy with Iran or is it too horrible (PC) to mention to them?

I agree with the Pope in principle, but is His Holiness being a little naive about the secular world?

#8  BTW, I expect 'modern' Popes to be by definition against wars. It goes along with the job description. Wars are something that should never be 'loved'. Sherman was right, it's hell. Only to be pursued as a dirty necessity of dealing with the historical unchanging record of human behavior.

#7  If Nuclear Deterrence is no longer justifiable that seems to force one to the idea that Nuclear War is justifiable.

The only alternative is the fantasy world of "get rid of all nuclear weapons" and peace and love will rule the earth. This is the mindset of the gun-grabbers.

#6  Please list the (short) wars won by ethics.

Please list the wars won. You can be magnanimous in victory not in defeat.

#5  The Pope is an Argentine and suffused with Jesuitical thought. After Liberation Theology failed in Europe the Spanish Jesuits exported it to Latin America. Always behind the curve, the Latins adopted it even though the "Base Communities" the movement created would have eventually destroyed the Catholic Church in South America. Really, Argentines are the last to get the word, and the Pope seems the last of the last.
It is well to remember the old aphorism, if you could buy an Argentine for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth you would be an instant millionaire.

#3  What youth?

The ones that were aborted, or not had by less violent means so that princess could have a career, money, status, and fun?

Either this guy is playing a long game that is unfathomable or he has in curable 1968 disease.

#2  Utopian dreams of peace and love have failed. They have historically failed because 'evil' is a human condition of will and desire, and is 'evil' ever present. Forget the unicorns, I'm going with General Mattis on this one.
