UN to include rival assembly in Libya peace talks
2014-12-10
The UN will widen a new round of negotiations aimed at ending Libya’s continuing political crisis by including a rival assembly challenging the recognised government, its special envoy said late on Monday.

Libya has had two rival governments and parliaments ever since a group called Libya Dawn seized Tripoli in August, installing its cabinet and forcing the recognised Prime Minister Abdullah Al Thinni flee to the east.

The UN's first round of talks in September brought together the elected House of Representatives and members from the city of Misrata linked to Libya Dawn who had boycotted the assembly. A second round of talks was supposed to start on Tuesday after the first produced no progress. UN Special Envoy Bernadino Leon said during a visit to Tripoli that they would be postponed until next week.

Leon said the talks would include members of a rival assembly in Tripoli, the General National Congress (GNC), the country’s previous assembly reinstated by the new rulers in the capital. He might find it hard to sell the inclusion of the GNC to the House of Representatives when he visits its members based in the remote eastern city of Tobruk on Tuesday.

Leon dodged a question whether his plans means the UN is dropping its position that the house is the sole legitimate assembly.

#8  UN = Leftist Elites = Golgafrinchans - thus:

- Order, order! - If I could just say Order, order! I would like to call to order the 573rd meeting of the colonisation committee of the planet of Fintlewoodlewix.
This is futile! 573 meetings and you haven't even discovered fire yet! If you care to look at the agenda, we are having a report from the Hairdressers' Fire Development Sub-committee.
That's me.
That's you? What have you done? Well they gave me a couple of sticks.
Yes.
And? Curling tongs? You're going to die out, you know that? You are obviously being totally naive! When you've been in marketing as long as I have, you know that before any new product can be developed it has to be properly researched.
We've got to find out what people want from fire, how they relate to its image - Stick it up your nose! - Precisely what we need to know.
Do people want fire that can be fitted nasally? And the wheel! What about this wheel thing? They say it's a fascinating project.
We're having a little difficulty there.
Difficulty? It's the single simplest machine in the entire Universe! All right, Mr Wiseguy! You're so clever, you tell us what colour it should be! O Mighty Zarquon! - Has no one done anything yet? - Yes! I have declared war on the next continent.
Declared war? There's no one living there.
Yes.
But there will be one day.
- So we've left an open-ended ultimatum.
- What? And blown up a few military installations.
- Military installations, Number Two? - Yes, sir.
Well, potential military installations.
All right, trees.

#7  This cluster fuck of a peace talk will last years.

What are the overs and unders of them still arguing over the shape of the table and the site of the peace talks this time next year?

#6  I nominate Pyongyang, because N Korea leads the world in the battle against light pollution.

#5  Gaza: all that picturesque rubble... Though I haven't heard anything about the five star restaurants and hotels, or those beautiful marble and brass shopping malls being damaged, so that's ok.

#4  I was thinking "Gaza".

#2  When President Cruz / Walker takes the oath of office, can we then move the UN to Strasbourg, or Lausanne or somewhere else, and cut off the payments?

#1  Leave it to the UN to maximize the potential for long lunches and endless meetings and negotiations.

Apparently the UN never read the memo about how fanatics only go through the motions of negotiating while they burn the house down around you....while promising not to.

This means you too John.
