Real Madrid Removes Cross From Logo To Avoid Offending Muslims
2014-11-28
The logo change was agreed to by the world's wealthiest sports team, valued at nearly $3.5 billion, in order to avoid offending Muslim sensibilities as the team and the bank enter a three-year dhimmitude "strategic alliance," according to Real Madrid President Florentino Perez.
I went to the page JFM cites in comment #1 below (thank you JFM!) and persuaded free translation.com to tell me what it says. The most recent change in the logo that is listed there says nothing about offense, Muslims, the purchase of the team, or of a bank. It also doesn't say exactly when the change occurred.

It's also very, very clear that THERE IS NO CROSS on the logo -- not now and NOT on the several logos used since the club's inception. Even in the original 1902 emblem there is no cross.

So unless the writer of the story has other evidence, the statements presented above appear to be false. Does anyone have more information?

Update at 1400 CT: thank you JFM for your further thoughts and correction. Dang, you really DO have to enlarge the emblem to see the tiny cross at the top. That's what this is all about? I could see removing the cross just in terms of making the design a little less fussy.

#5  Note to moderator: Click on the logos to enlarge them. You will see the cross on all the logos sporting a crown

Real Madrid means "Royal Madrid". It got that name because at one time the King of Spain endorsed the club (and a number of clubs). So on the very first logos there is neither crown or cross. Then after endorsement it got a crown and, since the crown of the King of Spain has one, a cross. Second Republic was not a time to have royal in the name or either of crown or cross so it lost them. Not if you wanted to stay alive. After the fall of the Republic it got back name, crown and cross. (Real Madrid's president had fought victor's side but was a monarchist not particularly fond of Franco.

BTW: There is an English version of the web site.

#4  Recently a Spanish town has changed its name from "Matajudios" to new one.

French press has enthousiastically translated this as "Kill the Jews". That is a possible translation since Mata is the imperative form for "to kill". But. But a number of Spaniards are called Matamoros and everyone understands this is not as command but as a shortened form of "el Mata moros". ie 'The Moor Killer" and that the guy descends from a particularly effective Reconquista warrior. So our town could have been named not "Kill the Jews" but "the Jew Killer" and that could mean a porgom or just something else like a fire/flow/plague in the Jewish where lots of Jews died. Right?

So what says history? First, this town got the name centuries before the first pogrom in Christian Spain. Second: this town is just a bridge away from the place where the Count of Castilia gave equal status to Jews, probably first time in Europe since that was in 9th century. Second: Because the original name was "Mota de los Judios": "Hill of the Jews". Just a place where Jews were majority.

But that was not what the French pres wanted to believe and make believe.

PS: Most European nations expelled tits Jews in the Middla Gaes. That includes Englaand and France. Spain was the last to so in 1492 and its Jews were given six months and could take with them what money they had? Obviously real stae like houses were sold far below noraml prices but that was far more than French or English Jews got.

#2  Sr. Pérez might want to reflect on a series of events in Spain between 710 AD and 1492.
