Suspected bomb destroyed amid tight security in Zamboanga City
2014-10-12
Late Saturday, police disrupted a thermos abandoned at a public square in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

Police Chief Angelito Casimiro said they received reports about the abandoned thermos at Plaza Pershing near the City Hall building, and immediately deployed the bomb squad and destroyed the suspicious item. Casimiro did not say whether the thermos contained an explosive or not, but other reports said it contained an improvised explosive device and iron nails.

The plaza - named after U.S. military commander Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing who defeated Muslim insurrection in the region almost a century ago - was also bombed by the Abu Sayyaf in August 2007.

Police and military authorities have tightened security in Zamboanga City which is celebrating the month-long Fiesta Hermosa Festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. Hundreds of soldiers and policemen were deployed turning the city into a virtual garrison in an effort to protect the public from terror attacks.

#1  Pershing square is in the center of town and across the street from the municipal buildings. It is a very congested center with school kids, street people, and markets. around the square the streets have the usual garbage and people living on the street. The park is clean, no trash. There is some irony there and a lesson to the world in that park. Pershing was a butcher in the Philippines. He believed in total war and killed regardless of sex or age. The point of all of this is that over 100 years later the people still respect him and the park that bears his name. People respect strength. We have forgotten that.
