| Durga idols vandalised in Khulna |

| [Dhaka Tribune] Miscreants have vandalised at least four idols of Hindu goddess Durga at two separate Puja Mondops at Doba village in Khulna's Rupsha upzila. During the attack on early Monday, at least seven people sustained injuries, while 10 shops were vandalised and two houses also looted. The injured are Sujit Kumar Bagchi, 28, Sujit Kumar Basu, 27,Chayan Dash, 24, Sagor Odhikari, 21, Biplob Kumar Sarder, 28,Amit Kumar Bishwas, 27, and Amit Kumar Majumdar, 28. Witnesses said a group of miscreants led by one Sohag Mollah attacked the Mondops at midnight and vandalised the idols following an altercation over seating arrangements at a cultural programme. According to locals, the tension was sparked when some Moslem youths from the neighbouring Anandanagar village entered a cultural programme marking Durga Puja and tried to take the seats that were reserved for women. Following a verbal altercation with youths of Doba village, the Anandanagar residents returned to their own village and used loudspeakers of a local mosque to spread rumours that Hindu youths had assaulted Moslem youths in Doba village. Hearing the rumours, Anandanagar residents ‐ equipped with local weapons ‐ vandalised four idols at the Sarbojonin Puja Mondop as well as attacking a nearby temple. They also looted and caused damages to four shops and two houses in the vicinity. To prevent further attack, members of the local Hindu community also armed themselves with locally made weapons. Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control. On Monday evening, an arbitration was arranged between ten representatives each from the villages of Anandanagar and Doba, while local administration officials and politicians were also present. The meeting assessed the extent of damages and a decision was reached for compensating the victims. |
