| Assassination attempt on Benghazi militia leader |

| [Libya Herald] The commander of the Benghazi-based Omar Mukhatr Brigade, Ziyad Belaam, I remember him and his donkey... was seriously maimed in an liquidation bid last night outside his home in the city's Salmani district. He is said have been hit twice in the shoulder and was taken to the Benghazi Medical Centre. It is not known who was responsible. The brigade has been allied with Ansar al-Sharia ...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet... , the 17 February Brigade and Libya Shield ...a conglomerate of pro-Islamist militias deployed across Libya. It reports to the Libyan defense ministry and is organized like a real army unit. Its commander used to head a Benghazi brigade called Free Libya Martyrs... No 1 against Operation Dignity and the Saiqa Brigade, and there have been reports that relatives of those who have been assassinated by Islamists in the city have now started taking Dire Revenge™. However, there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly... it is also alleged that there has been a falling out between Ansar and the Omar Mukhtar Brigade over weapons. |
