Russian bombers penetrated U.S. airspace at least 16 times in past 10 days
2014-08-08
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Russian strategic nuclear bombers conducted at least 16 incursions into northwestern U.S. air defense identification zones over the past 10 days, an unusually sharp increase in aerial penetrations, according to U.S. defense officials.

The numerous flight encounters by Tu-95 Russian Bear H bombers prompted the scrambling of U.S. jet fighters on several occasions, and come amid heightened U.S.-Russia tensions over Ukraine. Also, during one bomber incursion near Alaska, a Russian intelligence-gathering jet was detected along with the bombers.

#9  Childish behavior. They know we won't shoot them down so its not even particularly daring. Just an annoyance to show they can do it with impunity.

Mom, he put his hand on my side of the car again!

#8  Thanks for setting everyone straight Lone Ranger. I flew out of the ice strip at Little Diomede in March 1988 on a VFR flight plan. As soon as I cleared the island FAA flight service called on the radio an asked if it was N5285K. NORAD wanted to know NOW!!!

#7  Although the "penetrations" are not encompassing a lot of real estate, the ramping up is of interest.

Maybe a birthday diversion for Mr. O?

#5  Except near Alaska, what they are "penetrating" is just the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), which is international airspace.

The media just sensationalizes everything out of all proportion.

Near Alaksa, they are probably flying near (or over) some half-submerged rocks that belong to Alaska, but which are a couple of hundred yards from some half-submerged rocks that belong to Russia. YAWN.....

#4  With the leadership we have in Washington, I'm surprised they're not landing at Elmendorf to refuel.

#2  Are they actually overflying Alaskan airspace or just the far western Aleutians?
