Destroy Hamas? Something worse would follow: Pentagon intel chief |
2014-07-27 |
(Reuters) - Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, the outgoing head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, warned on Saturday that the destruction of Hamas would only lead to something more dangerous taking its place, as he offered a grim portrait of a period of enduring regional conflict. "If Hamas were destroyed and gone, we would probably end up with something much worse. The region would end up with something much worse," Flynn said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. "A worse threat that would come into the sort of ecosystem there Â… something like ISIS," he added. Flynn said bluntly: "Is there going to be a peace in the Middle East? Not in my lifetime." |

#17 We are swatting at flies, again. Why even screw with Hamas? They are foot soldiers. Get strategic, fight strategically, go after their leader and funding. I'm talking about their strategic leader, not some ground commander. We will fight forever, like the foolish Israelis who are just defending their borders and not working the root cause. They have been defending their borders, their people, but they have no intent of ending this. We know who Hamas reports to, so does Israel. Get in there and fix it! |

#15 "something worse will follow?" Well there was a time when Israel 'occupied' Gaza and there was relative peace. |

#14 Of course, something worse will follow if the US and the regional powers continue to sniff flowers, play golf and do nothing. |

#13 4000 years of history always shows that there is someone next. Don't worry about it, deal with it. Or at least till they win and they have to deal with the next worse thing to show up till one of those wins. |

#9 Quite probably. Al Qaeda in Gaza and several others are waiting in the wings. But 1) they are much smaller organizations, proved by the fact that they could not overthrow Hamas, and 2) it takes a while to build up supplies and connections, so in the meantime the new rulers would be weak and ineffective. This would give Israel time to degrade the new, worse thing to ineffectiveness, considerably delaying the next Gaza war -- a very good thing. Finally, the newcomers are likely to be unacceptable to Iran, cutting off a generous donator of war material and training, even as Egypt keeps the border tightly closed. And while ISIL and Qatar stand ready to lend assistance to a likeminded taqfiri group, the Caliphate is likely to offer that training as apprenticeships in its own jihad, which seems to be killing off a good many of its young enthusiasts. |

#7 He's not saying worse for ISRAEL, he's saying worse for the region. Which by he means Muslim-controlled states. So no, something worse wouldn't follow for Israel, but everyone else around there? Probably alot of sectarian killing like Iraq and Syria. |

#6 In support of General Flynn's theory, wiping them all out would play hell with efforts at genetic mapping as a tool of causal discovery. As second thought however, I suppose the origins are already fairly clear. |

#5 I certainly hope the medical community does not adopt this type of flawed logic and resignation in their struggle to cure cancer or Neurodegenerative Diseases. Very disappointing General Flynn, but I suppose it's reflective of the greater regime view. |

#4 Something Worse? Oh like digging tunnels for mass kidnappings and killings at Rosh Hashanah ? Like firing thousands of missiles at Israel indiscriminately? Like diverting and stealing from their own people? Like teaching hate from birth? Like using hospitals, schools and houses of worship as military depots? Like using civilians and human shields? Like having their very governing document requiring them to destroy Israel? Like being lackeys for hostile nations in the region? Like fronting for religious extremists? Like promoting genocide and terrorism? Must be some strange definition of "worse" he's working from. |

#1 if something like ISIS gets power in Gaza, they'll execute all the Shia and that will shut down the remaining Iran support furthermore, all Gaza supporters will then be ISIS supporters which means even the EU and UN will be hesitant to give aid |
