New York State Is Set to Loosen Marijuana Laws
2014-01-07
[NY Times] Joining a growing group of states that have loosened restrictions on marijuana, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York plans this week to announce an executive action that would allow limited use of the drug by those with serious illnesses, state officials say.
Pretty much includes a large swath of the American left.
The shift by Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat who had long resisted legalizing medical marijuana, comes as other states are taking increasingly liberal positions on it -- most notably Colorado, where thousands have flocked to buy the drug for recreational use since it became legal on Jan. 1.

Mr. Cuomo's plan will be far more restrictive than the laws in Colorado or Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, where medical marijuana is available to people with conditions as mild as backaches. It will allow just 20 hospitals across the state to prescribe marijuana to patients with cancer, glaucoma or other diseases that meet standards to be set by the New York State Department of Health.

#4  Procopius2k, difference is you could be stoned two weeks ago and still fail the drug test.

#3  Smoking cigarettes - bad. Smoking pot - not so bad. Damage to lungs - covered under Obamacare? Non-smokers, who also work, will pay for those who smoke too much, or don't work.

#2  So...an employee that blows a 0.08 at work could also be fired. Alcohol has been legal for quite a while. Don't mix either at work or driving.

#1  Smoking pot can still get you fired in Colorado

Excerpt:

If a company has a drug policy in place, and an employee fails a drug test, "employers can take whatever action they deem to be prudent," says Curtis Graves, an attorney for the Mountain States Employers Council, a nonprofit that represents about 3,000 companies, many of those in Colorado.

Employees can even be fired for using medical marijuana with a doctor's prescription.

The reason for this apparent contradiction is that smoking pot is still illegal under federal law, Graves explains.

Perhaps the same can be said for New York or any other State for that matter.... something to think about...
