Sebha Local Council stops work because of attacks
2013-12-27
[Libya Herald] Following an attack by gunnies against its offices yesterday morning, Sebha Local Council has suspended its work.

"It's not the first assault. We've seen a series of attacks earlier this year", Deputy Council Leader Azideen Eiffa told the Libya Herald today.

Eiffa added that a hand grenade had also been thrown at the Sebha offices of Libya Al-Watania TV causing slight damage, but again no casualties.

Asked who was responsible for the attack on the council officies, Eiffa said that he did not know. "They were just gunnies."

No one was injured in the attack. But given the insecurity it was unreasonable to expect council employees to work in such conditions.

" We're on strike," he said. "We have the right to do so. We demand greater protection for our employees."

The army and the police had to be reinforced, he demanded. The army had set up checkpoints at exits and entrances of the town, he said, but it was not strong enough. It has itself been subject numerous attacks, he said.

There had been a meeting of the south's Congress members a month ago in Sebha to discuss security but there had been no results, he added.

"Security in Sebha is so fragile. We demand a much greater presence of the army and police and that they be fully trained and equipped."
