| Senators seek tougher penalty for rapists |

| [Pak Daily Times] Legislators in the Upper House of Parliament on Monday passed a resolution demanding appropriate measures against increasing incidents of rape, particularly of minor girls in the country. Pakistain People's Party (PPP) Senator Mian Raza Rabbani presented the resolution, which was passed unanimously. He strongly condemned such heinous acts, particularly the recent rape of a minor girl in Lahore. In the resolution, he called upon civil society, intellectuals, holy mans and media to launch a social campaign against perpetrators of this crime and urged federal and provincial governments to amend the law to award stern punishment to those who are found guilty. Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq termed cases of rape "shameful" for the country. He added, "Rape of a minor is a psychological problem and it should be addressed." He urged all segments of society to play their role against this crime. |
