#2 The headline's statement isn't exactly true. The German electorate moved to the right, parliament moved to the left. The parties who command a majority in parliament (Social Democrats, Greens & Communists) lost voters and their combined share of the vote decreased compared to '09. An unprecedented 15% (9% Conservative/Liberal) of the voters isn't represented in parliament at all due to the 5% threshold. Germany's electoral law stipulates a mode of representation that is supposed to be proportional in principle. It isn't 'first past the post.' It's like a milder version of the absurd result of the 2002 election in Turkey. |
