Key U.S. lawmakers: Expect strike in Syria |
2013-08-26 |
[SECURITY.BLOGS.CNN] Two key members of congressional foreign affairs panels say they expect the United States to strike Syria following reports of chemical weapons attacks in that country last week, though other politicians interviewed Sunday cautioned that unilateral action would be misguided. "I think we will respond in a surgical way and I hope the president, as soon as we get back to Washington, will ask for authorization from Congress to do something in a very surgical and proportional way. Something that gets their attention, that causes them to understand that we are not going to put up with that kind of activity," Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday." |

#21 Re Grom @ # 2: So, is he trying to make Obama look bad --- or is he batshit crazy? Why can't it be both? |

#20 Assad is talking tough. He knows Putin is a calculated player who does not fear the Champ, and he [Putin] will not roll over. Putin will smile and possibly join the Chinese in some counter move, possibly in the Pacific. I wouldn't discount some coordinated counter move by the Iranians either. |

#19 I don't generally agree with Threater but in #5 comment he is pretty much on the mark. Stay out. Or if you can't, then cynically just subtly let them kill each other. |

#17 And notice the big brave French and British egging Obamaniac on. Maybe someone should suggest to Russia that they cut off their gas shipments to the EU if they don't stfu. As the saying goes, never interrupt your enemy when he is making a big mistake. |

#16 From my readings, there appears to be something of a consensus that the current chemical weapon use is an amateur attempt to shape political opinion and pull the US into the mess. As I said yesterday: Al Qaeda has long been developing a chemical warfare program. There are a significant number of Syrian rebels, besides al-Nusra, allied with AlQ. Arab groups have long situated weapons and weapons facilities among the population. Arab groups have also used the population as props, like in Gaza and Egypt. It's not all that far a stretch to consider any chemical attack in Syria as not automatically done by the Syrian government. |

#13 I was thinking more along the lines of 'Libya', 'Mali' and 'the Balkans', albeit much uglier. |

#12 Same thing that happened after Korea, Vietnam, First Gulf War, Second Gulf War, Afghanistan ? |

#11 "we are not going to put up with that kind of activity" And what happens after that? |

#10 How is it that friends and relatives can walk freely about the impact areas without being contaminated? Speaking of contamination, we've seen no effort or discussions of decontamination. The rockets allegedly used appear amateurish, the types used by Palestinians against Israel. From my readings, there appears to be something of a consensus that the current chemical weapon use is an amateur attempt to shape political opinion and pull the US into the mess. |

#9 I'd amend my remark about Corker to say that he's no moron, and merely a sleazy self-interested pol (a redundancy that occasionally needs to be trotted out as a reminder) possessed of oodles of native cunning. |

#8 Basically, Corker is using this to divert attention from his slavish support for amnesty. |

#7 With morons like Corker representing the GOP, it's clear our options are between Tweedledee and Tweedledum. |

#5 Wave a stick in the air and say ,"Shoo". ANY official act of "surgical strike" or any "proportional" anything is STILL taking a shot at the sovereignty of another country...just WHAT do you CALL that? You call that War, don't you? You want to call it something else? Like what? And what do you think the rest of the world will call it? I have a better idea...lets do nothing at all and SELL them poison gas. Give it to BOTH sides. Or if we can't be seen doing that....sell it to Saudi..... and let them sell it to Abdrool. |

#4 They "expect" a strike and desire it as well. Obamacare and the scandals demand it. |

#3 surgical... proportional Correct me if I'm wrong, but that, however neat and tidy, is an act of war. Do we really want to light that fuse? Batshit crazy doesn't begin to describe it. |
