30 schools close after drive-by shooting in southern Thailand |

Almost 30 schools in Narathiwat province called off classes yesterday after the shooting of a headmaster on Thursday. Ban Waeng School headmaster Avirute Yaseng was injured in a drive-by shooting while he was driving his car home in the evening. The directors of the schools yesterday held a meeting with security officers to find a way to reinforce security measures for teachers. After the meeting, hundreds of teachers, students and parents rallied to denounce the attack. The schools plan to reopen on Monday Meanwhile, a senior policeman who was injured when a motorcycle bomb exploded on Thursday has died. Pol Lt Manop Tansong was traveling in a police car with his colleague when the bomb went off. His colleague and three other villagers were injured by the blast. |
