British fighter jets have been scrambled to investigate an incident onboard a civilian plane travelling from Pakistan, Britain's defence ministry has said. Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident. The Defense Ministry said the two men were arrested on Friday on suspicion of "endangerment of an aircraft" after a Pakistan International Airlines flight was diverted to Stansted Airport in Essex, east of London. Typhoon jets were launched to escort flight PK709 after an incident had been reported onboard. "Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby have been launched to investigate an incident involving an aircraft in UK airspace," a ministry of defence spokesman said. The plane, which had been travelling from the Pakistani city of Lahore to Manchester airport, was believed to have been carrying 297 passengers. A spokesman for Stansted Airport said the plane had landed safely and was being held in an isolated area. The airport is reportedly otherwise running as normal. |
