Official: U.S. delays missile test to avoid 'misperceptions' by North Korea
2013-04-07
WASHINGTON -- The United States is delaying a long-planned missile test to avoid any misperceptions by North Korea amid mounting tensions, a senior U.S. Department of Defense official said Saturday.

Postponing the launch of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile, initially scheduled for Tuesday at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, was "prudent and wise," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The missile test had nothing to do with North Korea, but the United States decided to hold off "given recent tensions on the Korean Peninsula," the official said.

"The U.S. will conduct another test soon and remains strongly committed to our nuclear deterrence capabilities," said the official, who was not authorized to publicly release details of the launch.

#7  Speaking of ICBMS ...

* BHARAT RAKSHAK > ESIN:CHINA COMPLETES THE DEVELOPMENT OF [MIRVed] MISSLES CAPABLE OF OVERCOMING MISSLE DEFENSES.

versus

* SAME > US NEEDS 5-7 GBIS [Ground-Based Interceptors] TO INTERCEPT ONE [Russian] "TOPOL-M".

36 GBIS in operation around US is "somewhat limited" [SSSSHHHHHH ... CCCCCC grossly insufficient] to numbers actually required for effective BMD.

* SAME > FORBES: CAN US DEFENSES COPE WID NORTH KOREA'S MISSLES.

* PACIFICNEWSCENTER [fka Guam K-57 Radio News] > GLOBALSECURITY.ORG: THAAD SYSTEM STUCK SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TEST-PHASE + ACTUAL OPERATIONAL READINESS.

Actually, between Testing + "Initial [NOT Full] Operational Readiness] - MORE POPULARLY KNOWN AS "SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING".

* Also from GLOBALSECURIY.ORG > NORTH KOREA MISSLE SPOTTED ON TRAIN, SOURCES DISAGREE ABOUT TYPE.

NODONG-B "MUSUDAN" vs. NODONG-C/KCN-08???

#5  But showing off with your B-1 bombing drill was ok? Twitting pictures of B-52s? They need to pull the A-team off of supressing the Obama sisters' surf and turf two week va-cay and...oh...they were just reassigned the gun grabber meme. Gotchya, sure a few clips of prez-o floppy wristing up a flight of stairs to a teleprompter reading a 2nd grade level blurb about disarming the greatest and least expensive (to the gov) civilian defense will get them back to the table.

#4  What Barbara said. A nuclear Iran became a fait accompli the moment John McCain conceded the election in 2008... barring efforts by Israel, of course.

#3  "then how do they plan to contain a nuclear Iran?"

Silly EH - what makes you think this "Administration" wants to contain a nuclear Iran?

#2  What exactly is the 'misperception' that the White House fears?

If deterrence works then potential enemies are convinced that the US has the capability and the intent to retaliate with nuclear weapons if the US (or allies under the 'umbrella') are attacked with nuclear weapons.

If anything this missile test would've proven capability to the North Koreans, strengthening deterrence.

North Korea has openly declared its intent to attack the CONUS with WMD.

Here's what dovish candidate Kerry said on this subject in 2004 in Seattle:
"Any potential adversary should know that we will defend ourselves against the possibility of an attack by unconventional arms. And if such a strike does occur, as commander in chief I will respond with overwhelming and devastating force"

Why hasn't any administration official reiterated this point, that a North Korean nuclear attack will provoke an 'overwhelming and devastating' counterstrike?

Is it because they're about to officially abandon deterrence?

And if that is the case then how do they plan to contain a nuclear Iran?

#1  First the White House cuts back on the demo-antics in Korea.

Then the White House blames the USN for "'unauthorized deployments" of two ABM-capable destroyers off Korea.

Now this.

Keep trying, guys. You might hit upon a winning combination that'll make the NorKs compliant.
