The Truth About the DHSÂ’s MRAPs
2013-03-10
Turns out DHS bought 16, not 2,700, of them, and they're in use in various agencies to 'execute high-risk warrants.' Brief story from TTAG.

Since we featured the story a few days back I thought it would be useful to have the follow-up here.

#6  $ It is expensive to wash and sanitize sufficiently to bring back without also bringing flora and fauna we don't want here.

For an administration set on granting a lot of fauna amnesty, I'm sure some waivers will be found somewhere. BTW, we repatriated a lot of equipment from Gulf War I exposed to icky environments [not to mention unknown substances when Iraqi munition dumps were exploded]

#5  All that MRAP crap will stay overseas.

$ It is expensive to move.

$ It is expensive to wash and sanitize sufficiently to bring back without also bringing flora and fauna we don't want here.

$ It is not safe enough to be certified for US roads, so could not drive on any highway.

$ It will take a bunch of money to maintain them and keep them stored.

All the money spent on MRAPs is gone. Just ditch them where ever they are to whoever wants them. Just like these, we can make more when we need them.

DOD as straw purchaser for TSA? Interesting concept.....

#3  Before you get all relieved about the post keep in mind -

The military is being downsized again, probably below the 9/11 numbers. That'll be several brigades worth of troops and equipment.

The persistence of the 'ancient regime' that constitutes the Army's senior echelon of policy makers and wanks still loves big armor and has wet dreams over WWII and Gulf War I. They will be dumping the MRAPs as quickly as they can get away with it. [Think of it like the love the Air Force fighter mafia has for the A-10]. Maintenance costs will figure big enough in the budgetary calcs that someone will figure its better to get rid of them.

That means those vehicles have to go somewhere. The Afghans can't maintain them, thus their love of the Toyota el al small trucks.

Keep your eye on the ball.

#2  Did Farago (GM DeathWatch!) break that clunker of a story? Excellent writer, but a strange one.
