| Egypt court sentences in absentia 7 Coptic Christians, US pastor to death over anti-Islam film |

| An Egyptian court convicted in absentia Wednesday seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor, sentencing them to death on charges linked to an anti-Islam film that had sparked riots in parts of the Muslim world. The case was seen as largely symbolic because the defendants, most of whom live in the United States, are all outside Egypt and are thus unlikely to ever face the sentence. The charges were brought in September during a wave of public outrage in Egypt over the amateur film, which was produced by an Egyptian-American Copt. The low-budget “Innocence of Muslims,” parts of which were made available online, portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and buffoon. Egypt’s official news agency said the court found the defendants guilty of harming national unity, insulting and publicly attacking Islam and spreading false information — charges that carry the death sentence. |

| #4 Champ doesn't have to extradite them, they could just jug them at Gitmo. Champ has to do something with that prison camp as he continues to empty it of jihadis, you know... |

| #3 So when will Obama and Susan Rice extradite him to Egypt? Serious question. I have no doubt Obama would so do if it would bring him any advantage. After all he *did* leave his ambassador and some navy seals to the wolves. |

| #2 In retrospect the Soviet Union might have survived into the 21st century if they had cracked down on anti-soviet speech in the West. 'A Time for Choosing' was full of anti-soviet propaganda. A trial in absentia and subsequent conviction would have ended Reagan's political career before it began. I wonder why the Soviet Union didn't dare make such a move while weak and dependent Egypt is much less cautious. |
