Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr leaves for Canada
2012-09-29
The last Western detainee at Guantanamo Bay prison has returned to his native Canada, reports say.

Omar Khadr had been held at the US base in Cuba since 2002, after being detained in Afghanistan aged 15.

A military plane carrying Khadr to Canada left at 08:30 GMT, according to Canadian television.

He will serve the rest of his eight-year jail term in Canada. He pleaded guilty to killing a US soldier in Afghanistan.

He was sentenced to 40 years in prison by a US military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay in 2010 on war crimes charges that also included conspiring to commit terrorist acts.

But as part of his plea deal, his sentence was limited to eight years.

Under the deal, he became eligible to return to Canada last October.

The majority of Canadians supported the campaign to repatriate Khadr, now 26.
And may they have much joy of him, now that he is theirs.

#7  I've never been in a Canadian prison(or a Turkish prison either). I assume that they are very nice, with very polite guards, of course.

Do they provide halal meals, a pointer to Mecca, education opportunities, and all the other benefits that Gitmo does?

Glinesh Craling, if they had killed him, people would have screamed about US forces murdering a 15 year old. Even though he had already killed a US soldier.

As I've said for years, I wish the US would fully implement the Geneva Conventions we have signed. These include a drumhead courtmartial, followed by execution upon conviction for illegal combatants.

Oh, yeah? Show me the evidence. Or do I just take the BBC's word on that?
Oh, well. Maybe some whackjob inmate takes it upon himself to make Omar's prison stay...shorter than expected. He might've been safer in Guantanamo.

#5  Oops, that comment belongs with "Rival families street brawl story."

Still, Omar needs rough justice too...

#4  Been watching Copper on BBC America. Granted, the protagonist is an Irish immigrant working as a NYC cop right at the end of the Civil War, but it appears somebody in Merrye Olde Englande has a soft spot for rough justice.

I wonder what's prompting that attitude? Hmmmm???

#3  Looking for some "killing" are you Craling? There may be some Canadian Army logistics folks left at Kandahar you can link-up with, unless they have packed up and are gone now as well.

#1  Green Beret medic Christopher Speer was unavailable for comment, and I've haven't found any comments from the Afghan kids he pulled out of a minefield.
