Controlled detonation for real big WWII bomb found in Munich |
2012-08-29 |
A bomb disposal team has detonated an American bomb left over from World War II found in the German city of Munich. The detonation happened shortly before 22:00 local time (20:00 GMT) in the Schwabing district and was heard across the city, local media report. Yeah I can attest to it. There are reports that sparks from the explosion caused the roofs of some neighbouring buildings to catch fire. Here's a video of the explosion, a 550lb (250kg) device dropped by the Americans. This bomb was hidden for decade under a (now closed and demolished) very popular bar called Schwabinger 7. I knew it well. Munich bomb detonation |

#12 "Aerial bomb" is a literal translation of "Fliegerbombe" (hidden since 1945, of course). Yes. But bombe would work just as well, if there weren't so much of the local delivery kind in our world today. And yes again, the 8th Army Air Force, a gift that keeps on giving, with an occasional surprise left by the RAF. |

#9 Actually they find them all the time. The Munich bomb was a bit different because it had to be detonated in a densely populated area. |

#8 A 1.5-tonne mortar bomb probably fired by Nazi forces was also safely removed from the Polish capital, Warsaw. From AH 9418's link. Is there a bomb amnesty program running? |

#6 "Aerial bomb" is a literal translation of "Fliegerbombe" (hidden since 1945, of course). It was a mean one, meant to detonate hours or even days after the attack. Given the density of population in that area, it might well have killed hundreds. We were lucky. People have been dancing on that bomb for decades. It was located one meter under the surface. |

#5 The must mean a 500 lb general purpose bomb (225 Kg). We did not make a 550 lb bomb in WW2. |

#4 We live in such a world today that in the video they have to label it an 'aerial bomb'. |
