Another seven people arrested in British terror crackdown
2012-07-07
[Herald Sun] SEVEN men have been incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on suspicion of terrorist offenses in Britannia after a routine vehicle search turned up firearms and weapons, police said.
It's the Olympics coming up, of course. You get more bang for your Islamic buck when everybody's watching...
The arrests, which took place earlier this week in South Yorkshire in northern England, were announced one day after officers in London jugged
Please don't kill me!
six other terror suspects using stun guns and smoke grenades in early-morning swoops, including one on a home close to London's Olympic Park.
Wotta coincidence.
Police insist that the 13 arrests in recent days did not involve threats to the Olympics set to begin in three weeks,
"No, no! Certainly not! Mere coincidence, we assure you!"
but the counter-terror sweeps - and a false alarm Thursday that involved a bus filled with passengers - have raised anxiety in the run-up to the games.
Settling oneself in among several thousand paying customers -- the rabble can't afford tickets to Olympic events -- and then detonating is the essence of modern Islam...
The arrests came as transport officials established special "games lanes" on key London roads that will be used only by Olympic athletes, officials and VIPs, adding to the sense that the start of the long-awaited Olympics is just around the corner.
... as could be the start of the mayhem...
Police on Friday said there was nothing to suggest that the newly announced arrests were linked to the London raids a day earlier. They said the arrests came after a car was stopped on the M1 highway in South Yorkshire on June 30 and impounded for not having insurance. It said "firearms, offensive weapons and other material" were later found hidden in the vehicle, which prompted police to trace and arrest the driver, passenger and other suspects.

Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
's front man Steve Field insisted there was no sense of alarm at the spate of arrests so close to the start of the Summer Games.

"We have been looking at the issue of security at the Olympics for some time and we have robust plans in place," he told news hounds.

Police said three of the men were incarcerated

Tuesday, three on Wednesday and one on Thursday. Six of them are in their twenties, while one is in his 40s.

on suspicion of preparing or instigating acts of terrorism. They were being questioned by officers and their residences were searched.

The items found in the vehicle were undergoing forensic testing.

Britannia's terror level is currently ranked as substantial - the third highest point on a five-point scale - and means an attack is a strong possibility. Intelligence officials say there has been an expected increase in chatter among turban groups ahead of the Olympics, but there are still no specific or credible threats targeting the games.

#3  Sudden, pre-Olympic anti-terr "crackdowns". After the events are concluded, a hearty round of pints and pats on the back as business returns to usual.

#1  First they're arresting a guy with a sword.
Now they're handcuffing anybody with a stun gun.

Right chaps.
I think I'll go stand on the south end of Tower Bridge at midnight and yell at the top of my lungs ... "alright lads, no knives here. no swords. no stun zappers. let's party!".

I already said that I thought that reasonable precautions by the police were more than appropriate. But it's nearly impossible to stop all crime in London, and you're not making the place safer if you disarm civilians from carrying things that might offer sensible defense.

that's my $0.02
