Canadian court lets Bangla Buddhist remain |
2012-01-27 |
The Federal Court of Canada said the secretary of a Buddhist temple in Chittagong, Bangladesh needs the country's protection from "government goons" and a "militant Muslim faction" in his homeland, chastising refugee officials for trying to send him back. Ruptanu Barua was active in protecting Buddhist rights in his homeland before fleeing to Montreal, where he claimed asylum. He was not involved in politics; he was merely a member of a religious minority, the court heard. CanadaÂ’s Immigration and Refugee Board believed Mr. BaruaÂ’s testimony of persecution he suffered as an active Buddhist in Chittagong and his fear of continued danger. |
