Four unidentified armed suspects were killed in an exchange of small arms fire in the Mexican border town of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Wednesday afternoon, according to Mexican news accounts.

The gunfight and apparent pursuit was initiated in Las Palmas colony, continuing in Nueva Americana and Real del Norte colonies and ended on Avenida Prolongacion Perez Treviño. A Mexican army patrol ran into several vehicles manned by armed suspects.

Reports say an unknown number of soldiers were wounded in the chase and firefight.

The area approaching Piedras Negras is considered Los Zetas territory, which the group uses as a staging area for smuggling operations into the United States.
