Argentina launches naval campaign to isolate Falkland Islands |
2011-12-06 |
![]() Argentine patrol commanders carrying out interceptions near the South American coast told Spanish captains they were in violation of Argentina's "legal" blockade of sea channels to the Falklands. The warning has been backed up in a letter to Aetinape, the Spanish fishing vessels association from the Argentine embassy in Madrid warning boats in the area that "Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and adjoining maritime spaces are an integral part of the Argentine territory." The confrontation strategy targetting foreign boats marks an escalation of tensions in seas that Duke of Cambridge, a Flight Lieutenant with the RAF, is set to patrol during a tour of duty last year. The Duke is to be deployed to the Falklands next February as part of a routine training duties. Commanders would face the dilemma of despatching the Royal to take part in an operations to monitor or contain the Argentine challenge. President Cristina Kirchner has adopted a steadily more beligerent stance towards Britain's South Atlantic possessions. A newly formed gathering of South American nations meeting in Venezeula backed Argentina's sovereignty demands at the weekend. So long Falklands. You will now be Argentina's. There is no way the British can fight for it and Obama will not lift a finger to help. |

#15 Argentina would like the BRIC Group of Nations to be BRIC + 1 = BRICA??? I've read that BRAZIL is going on a Sub buildup, mostly modern SSKS but also a few SSN/SSG Nukies. [OWG-NWO PAULA "ITS THE WAY THAT HE LOVES HER/TRIPS TO BRAZIL" ABDUL here]. |

#14 They probably didn't think they were ready, but felt their hand forced by Bammo's tanking reelection chances. |

#13 Unfortunately the administration has been active, actively involved on behalf of the Argentinians vs. the English soon after the public announcement of energy discoveries, much like the administration was quite active in sanctions and retribution against Honduras when they outed their tyrant in perhaps the most legal and peaceful ouster of a tyrant that I can think of. |

#12 Cristina Kirchner has many problems. The country is broke. China has been very active in Latin America. Kirchner won reelection bigtime so whatever she does the people are behind her. China might see some advantage here. We certainly aren't active. |

#11 Has the Argie Navy improved its ASW capabilities? |

#10 The Argies can make life miserable there if they want, but they actually can't take the Falklands unless they stage an invasion. A regiment of British troops, decent transport, helos, good anti-air missiles and plenty of ammo, and a successful invasion just won't happen. Argie generals are good for coups. Argie soldiers are draftees. Their equipment is awful. Their training is worse. But the Brits do need to stand up. |

#5 Not if there's oil reserves in the area. |

#4 Seriously, the Falklands only have 3,000 people on it. The British should offer to *sell* the Falklands to Argentina in exchange for them paying the relocation costs of those who wish to leave, or granting Argentine citizenship who wish to stay, but some degree of home rule and respect for private property, as well as negotiated taxes and fishing rights. Argentina would quickly learn the Falklands are a white elephant. |
