Underwear bomber pleads guilty to all counts
2011-10-12
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian man accused of trying to detonate an bomb in his underwear aboard a flight to Detroit, surprised everyone on the second day of his trial Wednesday by pleading guilty to all the counts against him.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, and possession of a firearm or destructive device in furtherance of an act of violence.

Abdulmutallab acknowledged in a courtroom statement Wednedsay that he had previously visited Yemen and was "greatly inspired" to take part in such a plot by Anwar al-Awlaki. Abdulmutallab said, "I carried with me an explosive device to avenge the killing of innocent Muslims."

#8  Somebody got to him.
Instead of looking/acting like a stupid muslim rube in a long drawn out media circus and reinforcing that image for all of the others, he 'chose' to go down as a martyr for a noble cause. More prison points I think.

#5  I'm not a medical person, but I feel anyone who is going to commit suicide, even if it is part of jihad, is insane or temporary insane and should be sent to a facility for the criminally insane.
They could apply a large range of treatments, starting with a frontal lobotomy and move on to the Ludovico technique

#4  I don't know if he is bad enough for Florence. They have rather high standards for their alumni.

Whereas, he is just a "cornfield Nubian", as it were.

#3  I wonder what made him change his mind?

I dunno. Maybe he gets the guilts everytime he scratches his torched up scrotum...
He'll have plenty of time to do that at ADX Florence. It'll probably be the most constructive thing he does.

#2  I imagine he felt he had made his points and gotten his publicity.
detnews.com has the money quote: "Participation in jihad against the United States is considered among the most virtuous of deeds in Islam and is highly encouraged in the Quran," Abdulmutallab told the judge, reading from a statement.
