Three Mexican Federal agents were killed and another four were wounded in a shootout between Policia Federal (PF) forces and armed suspects in an area in far northeastern Nuevo Leon Friday, according to Mexican news accounts. A total of 18 federal agents were on patrol on board four pickup truck when they came under small arms fire near the village of San Carlos near Vallecillos, which is about 20 kilometers northeast of Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon. The ambush sparked a vehicle pursuit which ended when the PF unit came into contact with another, much larger criminal group with as many as 40 armed suspects hiding in an abandoned villa being used as a camp. A presumed exchange of gunfire took place. Three PF agents were killed while another four were wounded and evacuated by helicopter. A subsequent deployment of 200 PF troops and a search of the area failed to turn up the attackers. In the camp, security forces found seven stolen vehicles, hundreds of radios, Mexican Marine uniforms, cartridge loaders, packages of drugs, some grenades and, a rocket and rocket launcher. |
