EgyptÂ’s ex-First Lady jailed for 15 days

EgyptÂ’s Assistant Justice Minster for Illicit Gains Affairs Assem al-Gohary ordered on Friday the detention of ousted President Hosni MubarakÂ’s wife, Suzanne Mubarak, for 15 days for the first time on charges that she benefited illegally from her husbandÂ’s position, the MENA state news agency reported.
It was the first time the Mubaraks have been questioned by this branch of the Justice Ministry, which is looking into “charges that they used their position to acquire wealth illegally,” the office said. The former First Lady was questioned about the Library of Alexandria bank accounts, containing a total of US$147 million, which she was authorized to make deposits in and withdraw funds from. It remains unclear if Mubarak’s wife will be transferred to El-Kanater prison for women in Cairo, or she will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh Hospital as her husband.
