The staff director for the US Senate Indian affairs committee has objected to the US military's use of the code name "Geronimo" for Osama bin Laden during the raid that killed him.
In future operations, to keep everybody happy, codename all targets...George W. Bush.
Geronimo was an Apache Indian leader in the 19th century who spent many years fighting the Mexican and US armies, until his capture in 1886. The staff director and chief counsel for the committee, Loretta Tuell, said it was inappropriate to link "one of the greatest Native American heroes" with one of the most hated enemies of the US.
From what I've read, Geronimo was one of the most hated enemies of the US. But I'm sure he was nice to fluffy bunnies and Mother Gaia...

#8  It's war and he was a douchebag.

It may not be Snark of the Day, but it deserves a Plain Talk Award. And I'm stealing it. Thanks!

#7  Re Procopius: Shelby Foote references N.B.F. as the only six syllables that struck fear in the hearts of the Union Army.

#6  The ONLY reason Apaches ever get po'ed is because they didn't get an invite to the fight. Along with a bunch of the other Indian warrior tribes, just about any excuse will do to get in a brawl.

They did get quite po'ed when Pershing led the expedition into Mexico and didn't invite them. When they protested, the War Department tried to be diplomatic and said they couldn't provide either horses or guns.

"No problem. We'll bring our own." Pershing, who had fought Apaches years before, finally agreed to bring some scouts. He later brought some to France with him in 1916.

#5  I don't understand why we ever offered any specifics about the mission in the first place to a politically correct nation that lives in a frickin bubble. Witness those with their panties in a wad over 'shooting and killing an unarmed OBL', or 'are burials at sea islamic'? Who cares? It's war and he was a douchebag. Why didn't we just say: 'OBL is dead. All other details are classified.' Exasperating.

Just like Nathan Bedford Forrest is a great hero to numerous Southerners. So, will they rename some schools and public buildings with his name? Or would that be 'insensitive' to others?

#1  Geronimo was a hero? Didn't that guy make his name killing civilians?
