Osama's Killing Major Embarrassment for Pak Army
2011-05-02
In what could come as a big embarrassment for Pakistan's powerful army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden was killed just yards from a military compound that he visited last month where he had famously claimed that his forces had broken the "terrorist backbone".

"The terrorist backbone has been broken and Inshaallah we will soon prevail," Kayani said in his address at a passing out parade at the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul on April 23 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Incidentally, Osama was today killed in a highly secured compound just 800 yards away from the academy by the US special forces' personnel.

#10  JoeM, good analysis. I actually understood every word. :)

Richard, I bet they were thinking "Insh'allah." And, "we have nukes, and they have no spine."

I'll be interested to see what we're gonna do about it.

#9  So. Let's assume the Paks were actually and actively hiding him.
The folks who know best how good our intel gathering and analysis is is us. Next, due to practical experience, is the ISI.
Did they really think we would never find him?
Did they really think that, having found him, we wouldn't go after him wherever he was?
Recall the time the IAF didn't destroy a nuclear reactor the Syrians didn't have and left no tracks? We couldn't do as well?
What were they thinking? That they could defend him against us?
Something missing here.

#8  DID THE PAK ARMY NOT ONLY REMOVE THEIR GUARDS BUT HAD ALSO "TURNED OFF" Didn't have to be done by the whole 'PAK ARMY', could have been done by just a few key people in it, perhaps lured with promises of Green Cards for them &/or their relatives.

#7  On a separate note, I wouldn't use SGT SCHULTZ in this Artic - when Schutlz was made temporary STALAG 13 Commander by Col. Klink in order to promote German NCO morale, Hogan + Boyz thought they would have an easier time accomplishing their covert sabotage ops than as under Klink.

IIRC it tunred out that Schultz was not only a better Leader than officer Klink, but the reforms he instituted for Stalag security stopped Hogan + Boyz dead in their tracks.

#6  IMO THE ATTACK + DEATH OF OSAMA THIS WEEK ASKS MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS, ESPEC FOR THE US GOVT INCLUD BUT LIMITED TO POTUS BAMMER + ADMIN.

E.g. DRUDGEREPORT > [Osama Bin Laden, etal] PROTECTED BY PAKISTANI SECURITY.

No one is going to believe that wid a PAK Army Mil Academy nearby, + Mil Hospital, + a certain Top Govt. Islamabad Pol-critter, etc. that Pakistan did not know nor did protect OBL.

The above + use of 24-40 USN SEALS tells anyone that the US expected heavily armed resistance from Osama's personal/compound security including ala Osama-assigned Pak Army elements - as OBL was a high-value target, there were most likely USAF AC-130 SPECTRE gunships overwatching the SEALS' insertion + surrounding areas in case the Pak Army attempted to send in mass reinforcements from the nearby PAK garrison(s) to save Osama + company.

* 24-40 SEALS > STRIKE IN SURPRISE, CAPTURE OR KILL OBL, THEN QUICKLY DEPART WID OSAMA, OTHER? WID ENOUGH MEN TO FIGHT OFF ANY INCOMING PAK ARMY RESISTANCE THAT GET THROUGH THE SPECTRES OR OTHER CLOSE-SUPPORT HELOS.

Its quite possible that Islamabad may had decided to sacrifice OBL to the USA, given the current state of US-PAK Relations [Drone Strikes controversy] + detrimental risk to PAK econ asistance from the US. IOW, OSAMA'S PAK ARMY GUARDS MAY HAD WEIRDLY-N-MYSTERIOUSLY
"DISAPPEARED" AT THE TIME OF THE SEALS' ATTACK.

Osama was also personally wealthy enough to buy advanced area monitoring systems, as complemented by those used for his security by the Pak Army.

I believe the USA knew Osama's whereabouts for YEARS longer than publicly or officially acknowledged - IMO THE REAL QUESTION IS WHY ATTACK + KILL OSAMA NOW???

DID THE PAK ARMY NOT ONLY REMOVE THEIR GUARDS BUT HAD ALSO "TURNED OFF" THEIRS + OSAMA'S? MONITORS THAT WOULD'VE DETECTED THE INCOMING AMER SEAL FORCE???

#2  I was just looking at the Osama spread on Google Earth. Is that the Military Academy to the West, across the highway? With two grass airstrips alongside? I took the place for glasshouses.

#1  Interesting to find out who built the house five years ago and the planning permission.

I can see some paperwork going up in fire!
