Another blasphemer murdered in Pakistan
2011-03-07
[DPA]- Another alleged blasphemer has become a victim of Pakistan's controversial religious laws, media reported on Saturday.

The killing occurred on Friday, two days after the assassination of the minority affairs minister who had criticised the nation's blasphemy laws.

The Dawn newspaper said Mohammad Imran was killed by masked gunmen in a shop near a bus stop in Danada village of Rawalpindi, a garrison city adjacent to the capital Islamabad.

Imran had been charged with blasphemy in April 2009 for allegedly making insulting remarks about prophet Mohammed during a discussion in a village cafe. He and another defendant were set free by a court order after the prosecution failed to produce evidence.

A policeman said two of the attackers entered the shop while the third stayed outside.

'After spotting the target, they opened fire, killing Imran on the sport and escaped,' Mehmood Ahmed said.

Muhammad Akramm, elder brother of the victim, said his brother was killed by a man from a nearby village who had originally accused him of blasphemy.

The blasphemy law was decreed in 1986 by military dictator General Zia ul Haq, and carries the death sentence for derogatory remarks against the prophet Mohammed and the Koran.

No one has been hanged under the law, but several people have been killed by extremists, including those set free by the courts.
