Thai army won't raise southern insurgency with OIC

Thailand's army will not allow southern jihadis insurgents to pressure it into raising the issue of the southern jihad unrest with the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), said army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha on Wednesday.
"If we acknowledge the terrorists, they've won." Way to outsmart them, General.
"We all know that there have been many violent incidents [in the far south], but we will not fall into the trap of dealing with reality by discussing the southern security issue at the next OIC meeting.

"The army will do its best to address the problem by using the country's own laws," Gen Prayuth said before heading to restive southern Thailand.

He said he will instruct security forces to be more stringent, use more proactive measures and get more cooperation from the public.

More than 90 per cent of the people in the south have been cooperating with authorities, but the rest were still afraid, Prayuth said.

"There is no one clear group [responsible for the violence] but there are many groups of people breaking the law, especially drug problems," he said.

Gen Prayuth said police had arrested a group of people suspected of involvement in the bombing in Yala on Monday, Feb 21, which killed a woman and injured 17 other people, thanks to footage from a security camera.

Authorities still want to track down and arrest the remaining suspects.

"I would like the responsible ministry to install more CCTVs in the area," he said further.
