General Out As US Commander In Afghanistan At End Of Year
2011-02-16
General David Petraeus, the most celebrated American soldier of his generation, is to leave his post as commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon aims to replace General Petraeus, who was appointed less than eight months ago, by the end of the year. Sources have confirmed that the search for a new commander in Kabul is under way.

Petraeus took over last year from General McChrystal, whose Rolling Stone interview criticizing the President forced him to resign or be fired.
Short memories. What about Norman Schwartzkopf?
According to Michael Yon, Sec. Gates sez this is a rumor and isn't true.

#6  Maybe Rubio in the mix somewhere although I have not heard anything of him lately. We need strong leadership and supporting advisors/cabinet members who actually know something and have done something useful.

#4  Petraeus is a wise leader, wise enough to realize that he isn't the end-all-be-all, and what he does will all be for naught unless it continues after he is gone.

The way to do this is to create a philosophy, with lots of pragmatic input from subordinates about the best way to do things, then insure that they are all on the same sheet of music, so whoever takes over will keep the ball rolling.

This works even if the WH inserts some toady into the job. He would have to eliminate all of Petraeus' subordinates to screw things up royally. And odds are he wouldn't survive that fight.

#3  Just in time for a 'Draft Petraeus' movement.

Not that much in this administration has shown the ability to grasp consequences of their actions.

Should read..... notional commander. Petraeus' pending departure sets the stage for a US State Department assumption of the entire Afghan effort. They are standing in the shadows and calling the shots as we speak.

#1  Given the trunks difficulty in finding a unifying candidate to run against Bambi in 12, letting Petraeus out of Afghanistan one month before Iowa and New Hampshire would be the height of stupidity. Well, perhaps it is true.
