Iran Sets 400 Afghan Prisoners Free
2011-02-13
[Tolo News] Nearly 400 Afghan prisoners in Iran were released, Afghan ambassador in Iran said Saturday.

Afghan ambassador in Tehran, Obaidullah Obaid, said efforts are on the ground to set some more Afghans free from prisons in Iran.

A total of 200 Afghans imprisoned in Iran are sentenced to death, said Mr Obaid.

There are 3,800 Afghans in prison in Iran and efforts are in progress to lessen their punishments, Mr Obaid told TOLOnews.

"Around 387 Afghan prisoners were released in Iran and we are trying to free the rest," he said.

He said he is working to legalise the presence of Afghan refugees in Iran.

The comments came as there are numerous cases of mistreatment of Afghan refugees and Afghan prisoners in Iran.
