[Maghrebia] Three new Algeria self-immolation cases on Sunday (February 6th) raised the national total to more than ten since widespread protests over unemployment and high living costs began last month, Liberte reported. A man in his 40s attempted suicide during a protest outside the Labour Ministry in Algiers. The married father of three said his salary could not support his family. In Tlemcen, a man who lost his job as a municipal officer tried to set fire himself on fire at the wali offices. A 30-year-old also attempted self-immolation outside the municipal headquarters in Berrahal. The man, who has reportedly been engaged for years, could not get on the social housing eligibility list. |
