Great Moments in Socialized Medicine
2010-12-31
A Swedish man was forced to have his penis amputated after waiting more than a year to learn he had cancer.

The man, who is in his sixties, first visited a local clinic in Blekinge in southern Sweden in September 2009 for treatment of a urinary tract infection, the local Blekinge Läns Tidning (BLT) reported.

When he returned in March 2010 complaining of foreskin irritation, the doctor on duty at the time diagnosed the problem as a simple case of inflammation. After three weeks passed without the prescribed treatment alleviating the man's condition, he was instructed to seek further treatment at Blekinge Hospital.

But it took five months before he was able to schedule an appointment at the hospital. When he finally met with doctors at the hospital, the man was informed he had cancer and his penis would have to be removed.

It remains unclear if the man would have been able to keep his penis had the cancer been detected sooner.

The matter has now been reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) under Sweden's Lex Maria laws, the informal name used to refer to regulations governing the reporting of injuries or incidents in the Swedish health care system.

#14  an acquaintance of the wife's (from High School days) has been known to wait till 5:01 so that she can take kiddo to ER for sore throat/etc because "the urgent care or regular doc have a (2 or 3 dollar) copay and ER is free (medicaid)" seems the ER local to her sends non emergent cases to the urgent care at end of building except when they are closed.

Many of not most of our welfare types will use the ER as a family doc because of a less than $5 copay.

#13  Don't forget the number of illegal aliens who are using the ED as their [unpaid] Doctor's office. As a result the ED often does not have the funds to hire the staff and Doctors - so you end up waiting for 5 hours.

#11  why the hell don't the people who want socialized medicine emigrate to a place that already has it?

Because most such places require more of a prospective immigrant than a pulse. Germany requires German blood. Japan requires Japanese blood. Australia and Canada require specific skills and/or professional qualifications. And so on...

Nobody bats 1.000 in the game of life. Nobody.

Socialized medicine bats .100.

And, BTW -- why the hell don't the people who want socialized medicine emigrate to a place that already has it?

#8  Should force him to stand a bit closer, which he might have already been doing at his age. Frankly, I see no other operational impediments.

#5  The reason you wait five hours in an emergency room is because all the other 'emergency' rooms have closed in one hospital after another. When the redistributionists declared that no one could be turned away yet provided no fiscal compensation, the only hospitals which could fiscally keep them running were state and county facilities at the taxpayers' expense. So, now instead of the patient load being distributed among many, every one goes to the same emergency room and we wait. The poor still end up at the same state and county facilities they were shuffled off to before the great 'feel good' Socialist moment, but now they too get to wait with the resultant complications. Of course our Congresscritters are exempted with facilities set aside for their care. "Do you know who I am?"

#4  Stories like this prove nothing except that human beings are fallible, something we all already know. Contrast this recent medical horror story: "Sacramento girl Needed amputations after five hour wait at emergency room"
