2010-12-26
KARACHI — The year 2010 has been one of the most violent years in the history of Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, as it registered highest number of people killed since 1995, when 1,742 people lost their lives, according to a report compiled by the Citizens Police Liason Committee (CPLC).

The report stated that 1,247 people have been murdered in Karachi during 2010 as compared to 801 in 2009, more than an increase of 50 per cent. The month of August witnessed the bloodiest in 2010 with 162 people killed, while June saw the second highest murders of 135 and the increase in number of deaths is also attributed to target killings.

Besides the growing menace of target killings, in which majority of those murdered were political leaders, religious scholars, doctors and activists of almost all the parties including the cityÂ’s major stake holders, the MQM, the ruling Pakistan PeopleÂ’s Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP) and MQM (Haqiqi).

The year also witnessed the growing trend in ethnic and sectarian killings in a city of well over 18 million people .
