Thai terrorists gun down three, wound two more
2010-12-22
Suspected Islamic terrorists militants gunned down three people, a married couple included, in southern Thailand as officials boost security for New Year celebrations.

The husband, 49, and wife, 47, were shot dead at their stall selling pork at a weekly market in Pattani province on Tuesday evening. Police said the man worked for the local authority.

Also in Pattani, a 43-year-old construction worker at a Thai army base was killed in a drive-by shooting while returning from buying food early Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, the local governor instructed police and soldiers to step up operations, including round-the-clock checkpoints, over heightened fears of attacks over the New Year holiday. "We are focused on risky areas such as roads, markets and security around teachers and high-profile people," he said.

Plus:

A land official was shot and injured in Pattani province on Wednesday morning.

The deputy chief of Sai Buri police, said a pick-up truck driven by Kanchit Dulayaporn was attacked by men armed with AK47 rifles on a local highway. Mr Kanchit was shot in the left leg and his vehicle, which skidded off the road, was riddled with bullets.

Police blamed Muslim terrorists insurgents.

And:

A local official was seriously wounded by a gunman in Yala province on Wednesday afternoon. Aduena Jehtae, 34, was shot in the abdomen.

Eyewitnesses told police they saw a pick-up truck arrive at Mr Aduena's house, 300 metres from a police station. A man went into the house and fired one shot from a handgun before fleeing in the waiting vehicle.

Police blamed the attack on southern terrorists militants.
