Army sergeant receives Medal of Honor
2010-11-16

WASHINGTON – An Army staff sergeant who stepped into the line of fire to help a pair of comrades on the Afghan battlefield received the Medal of Honor on Tuesday — the nation's top military award.

President Obama awarded the medal to Salvatore Giunta at a White House ceremony, making the 25-year-old Iowan the first living service member from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars to be so honored. Seven others have received the award posthumously. Giunta was a rifle team leader in eastern Afghanistan's Korengal Valley when his squad was split in two after an ambush by insurgents. While under fire, Giunta pulled a fellow soldier to cover and rescued another who was being dragged away by the enemy.

#6  If one is mature and professional, then one understands the Office is presenting it, not the man.

#5  I would have much rather had this prestigious award presented to SSG Giunta by an American, but that is just me. I salute SSG Giunta. Thank God the Army is full of young men and women just like him.

#4  "They said we were soft, that we would not fight, that we could not win. We are not a warlike nation. We do not go to war for gain or for territory; we go to war for principles, and we produce young men like these. I think I told every one of them that I would rather have that medal, the Congressional Medal of Honor, than to be President of the United States." - Harry S. Truman

#2  I have some do-dads on my chest but nothing as grand as a MOH. I salute this man because I KNOW you get medals for the things you do almost every day, only this time an osifer reported it.
The man is a true Hero.
