Falling coconut threat to Obama neutralised
2010-11-05
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] The municipal authorities in Mumbai have removed coconuts from trees around the city's Gandhi museum in case any of them fall on US President Barack B.O. Obama when he visits, an official said today.

"The coconuts were falling off, so we requested the local authorities here to remove the remainder," the executive secretary of Mani Bhavan, Meghshyam Ajgaonkar, told AFP.

Mani Bhavan, where the father of the Indian independence movement Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to the city between 1917 and 1934, is in south Mumbai on Laburnum Grove, which is lined with coconut trees.

Mr Ajgaonkar said the precaution was taken as local and US officials undertook security sweeps of the museum and library before Mr Obama's visit. Mr Obama, smarting from an election defeat at home, starts a four-nation Asian tour on Saturday in India, whose relations with the United States have rapidly warmed in the past decade.

Mr Obama has often cited Gandhi as a major inspiration. He name-checked him in his Nobel peace prize speech and had a portrait of him in his US Senate office.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
President B.O. will be looking for a way to prove his love for India during the visit, as he tries to end suspicions in the world's largest democracy that his interest lies elsewhere.

Obama has described India as one of the few global partners for the United States and last year honoured Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with the pomp of Obama's first White House state dinner.

But many Indians have been uneasy about Obama's early efforts to build bridges with fellow Asian giant China and to assist India's historic rival Pakistain. Mr Obama got off on the wrong foot with New Delhi before his inauguration by musing about mediating over divided Kashmire.

However,
The infamous However...
US presidents have proven they can quickly break the ice in India. Bill Clinton is remembered fondly there for his amiable visit in 2000, just two years after sharp exchanges over New Delhi's nuclear tests.

Mr Obama may use a speech before parliament to pledge support for one of India's top goals -- a permanent seat on UN Security Council.
The whole trip to India, with the indulgences, extravagance and over the top expense, is perhaps the saddest thing Bambi has yet done ...

#23  This is another fake out. Everyone wants to know where all the stimulus money went. My guess O is left the building with a tidy package. Baa Bye suckers.

#21  Ebbang,
I never thought I'd say this, but the words "President Joe Biden" are strangely comforting to me.

#20  The latest word (H/T Drudge) is that 34 ships will not accompany Obummer on this trip. But remember, with Slow Joe Biden waiting in the wings, we want to keep the POTUS safe at all costs.

#19  Damn! Another opportunity to "send a message" lost. "President" O'Bumble just doesn't get it, and it's getting harder and harder to ignore the fact that he doesn't get it. IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU, IDIOT, IT'S ABOUT "WE THE PEOPLE". Take a deep breath, learn a little humility, and grow up. Otherwise, in 2012 you're going to be so despondent we'll have to initiate a "suicide watch". We probably have a few blind folk that will volunteer for that...

#18  I thought that was what the Medici tunnel was for? Besides that term is racist - perhaps herbiscus airial appendage?

Really what is the point of this trip? Besides finding the origins of shellack that is. I'm sure this will make many friends turning Mumbai into a 10 day LA tour.

#17  Of course, this is the result of a misunderstanding. An Indian official overheard a Democrat ranting about Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley, and confused the Democrat's racial slur against them with an expression of concern for falling fruit.

#16  Thank, God.

I was worried about that.

#15  Dear Obama,
I hope you have a safe trip, but please don't forget the message the voters sent you and your accomplices on Tuesday:

#8  This trip is stimulating India's economy. However, their economy doesn't need stimulating. Maybe he's going over their to learn how to stimulate our economy.

#1  The very serious threat that 40 aeroplanes, 32 war ships, 400 security personel, and 800 "friends", and one tunnel could not prevent from occuring HAS BEEN NEUTRALIZED.  That being the Falling Coconut Threat. Now this should NOT be a LAUGHING MATTER!The recent unexplained falling of the Presidential Seal, and the unexplainable flying book during a recent speach.  KARMA, dude!  Gotta watch out for the Obama KARMA.
