Mexican Marines acting on intelligence arrested 17 presumed members of the Gulf Cartel in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, according to Mexican news accounts.
Military forces also seized a significant haul of drugs, weapons, vehicles and other contraband.
Munitions seized include 49 rifle, two pistols, 101,533 rounds of ammunition, 1,200 magazines and six grenades. Military contraband seized include 125 military uniforms, 10 ballistic helmets, ballistic vests, 31 cell phones and 20 radios. Vehicles seized incldue vintage cars, SUVs and ATVs.
Drugs seized include eight packages of cocaine and 16 packages of marijuana.
Mexican Marines have been involved in numerous counternarcotic operations in recent days in and around Matamoros, which are likely to have contributed to this most recent bust.
