UN-bound Nicaraguan diplomat no longer breathing in NY

A senior Nicaraguan diplomat in New York has been found dead with his throat slashed as world leaders gathered in the city for the UN General Assembly's annual meeting.

Cesar Mercado, 34, who has been based in New York for eight years, was found in his apartment in the Bronx when his driver came to pick him up.

The driver discovered the door closed but not locked and the diplomat's body lying just inside the blood-spattered flat, police said.

An NYPD spokesman said: "The knife was found on the floor next to him." Police were trying to establish a possible motive, and no suspects were immediately identified.

Mercado was a consulate officer and Nicaragua's de facto consul general. He was based in an office building near the UN headquarters in Manhattan.

Nicaraguan Vice President Jaime Morales said US Ambassador Robert Callahan assured him that the FBI would do everything possible to investigate.

I thought initial reports may indicate something more sinister with his ties to the UN and other Nicaraguan terror sympathizers but then stabbings usually indicate a personal act of revenge and the NY Post report points that way:

He took on the duties of consul general, working with passports and immigration visas....Sources said Mercado's throat was so deeply slit that his head was almost cut off and blood stained the walls, floor and bed. There were also stab wounds to his abdomen.
Mercado, a diplomat in the office of Nicaragua's ambassador to the United Nations, went to an undisclosed event Wednesday night before taking the subway home, authorities said. Cops said they were looking at video that may provide clues.
Investigators are probing the possibility that the killing was caused by a gay relationship gone wrong, police sources said. The sound of men arguing was heard in the apartment before the murder, and neighbors said Mercado was sometimes seen with dangerous-looking men, the sources said.
A co-worker told cops Mercado was depressed, lost weight and had recently said he had tested positive for AIDS, the sources said. Detectives are exploring the possibility he was murdered by someone outraged after he told them of his diagnosis, according to the sources said.
