Iran rejects 'interference in Iraq'
2010-09-15
[Iran Press] Iran's envoy to Storied Baghdad has stressed that Tehran backs the swift formation of a new government in Iraq, dismissing allegations of Iranian interference in the war-torn country.

"The formation of a government in Iraq is an internal affair and we are not meddling in it. We hope that the new Iraqi government is formed as soon as possible," Mehr News Agency quoted Hassan Danaifar as saying on Tuesday.

"Iran has no red lines over the ascension of al-Iraqiya alliance leader Ayad Allawi to the post of prime minister," he added. "Iran does not object to the formation of a government in Iraq, but supports it."

Since the Iraqi elections in March, Allawi has repeatedly accused Iran of meddling in the country's political impasse over the nomination of a new premier.

In an interview with Der Spiegel last August, Allawi said above all other foreign powers he believes Iran wielded the most influence in Iraq.

"I am even sure that they have a red line and a veto on me," he added.
