Gen. Petraeus Interviewed: We'll be in Afghanistan for ten more years

#3  At the end of 10 years, the American and Afghan publics will be sick and tired of the corrupt and ineffectual government of Afghanistan, and someone like Dostum will get elected President, with a mandate to make the Pashtun problem go away -- by whatever means.

#2  What happens at the end of 10 years? How will one know when we are done with the place? Will they be civilized? Taliban ousted? Pacified? AQ killed off? We roll through the cities and level them? There is a non-corrupt leader in Afghanistan? It has become a vacation paradise?

#1  Petraeus' answers re the Koran burning are vague in one respect.

Where is the limit of appeasement of the Afghan people?

They did not like 'Burn a Koran Day'.

Will they tolerate the anti-GZM protests, a cancellation of the GZM project, Cartoons, South Park episodes, Rushdie novels etc?

Another problem are the 'reconcilable Taliban'?

Even assuming that they are 'reconcilable' should they not face at least some punishment for 9/11?
Should they not 'share the fate' of Al-Quaida?

Will the US just recognize a reconciliation government in Afghanistan and forgive these Taliban?

What is the implication for American deterrence?
