The Bonfire of the Qurans
2010-09-11
I think Pat Buchanan is an unmitigated a-hole, but his take on the war powers I think is correct.
This episode reveals the gulf between us and the Islamic world. Despite all our talk of universal values, tens of millions of Muslims, in countries not only hostile but friendly, believe that a sacrilege against their faith, like the burning of the Quran by a single American oddball, justifies the killing of Americans. What kind of compatibility can there be between us?

What do we have in common with people who believe that evangelism by other faiths in their societies merits the death penalty, as do conversions to Christianity, while promiscuity and adultery justify stonings, lashings and beheadings.

#8  I keep thinking about those 2 teenage girls in Texas. Their only crime was wanting to fit in with their peers at school, to not be 'different'. But, since they were Muslim, and chose to go to school without covering their hair (horror!) they were killed by their father and brothers.

I keep thinking I bet they don't give 2 shits about someone burning that goddam Koran.

#7  All joking and posturing aside, I think the biggest problem with burning Qurans is that you have to somehow get your hands on one, or however many you intend to burn. You would probably have to buy them, actually pay good money for them. Presumably the profits from this transaction would go to people who believe this devil's book should be published and they would be encouraged to publish even more.

Mrs. Uluque came up with a better idea this morning. When I came down for breakfast she said, "You better put out your flag today."

#6  I agree with Mr. Yellow, about Mr. Buchanan and this statement from him.

#5  China got a little too agresive with their southern neighbors -Vietnam- they got their arses kicked.

#4  anon1: Penny wise and pound foolish. By crudely building up their aggressive military forces, then being obnoxious about it to other SE and South Asian nations, China, on its own, is stimulating cooperative agreements between India, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, and anyone else who wants to join in.

By not being front and center, for once, the US is doing more to support this cooperation and mutual reliance than it would by trying to defend these nations.

At the same time, the festering boil which is the Ummah, is precipitously close to developing nuclear weapons, and, unlike the Chinese, who have at least some perspective about their use, the Muslim world still lives in a fantasy world where nukes are just big bombs, to be used against their hated enemies of the moment.

Hopefully, Iraq can get over its constipation and get around to having a democracy. Then perhaps Egypt might follow suit. Pakistan is and will likely remain a nightmare, so will be on the table until somebody is strong enough to rule the entire country.

#3  Muslims are the enemy. You are in no way culturally compatable or comparable. Islamic immigration should be severely restricted.

But they are NOT the enemy you should be provoking right now.

The USA needs to conserve its strength and marshall its forces.

You need to get on top of your economic woes because there is a sneaky silent foe that lurks like the giant under the mountain.

You are wasting your treasure and blood fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan while the Chinese menace grows apace.

The Chinese are not wasting time fighting the Muslims, they are sitting back laughing at you wasting your strength away.

In a few years the US will be drained, militarily and economically and China will do what it likes in the Pacific. You will be unable to stop them.

Please stop this insanity now - take the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan because war is coming and if the US don't win the next one then we are doomed to live under an era of submission to China.

Excellent question, what do they bring to the relationship? They'll let us live if we kiss their arses? Mighty nice of them, but I got another idea.

Nothing has changed. It's just an excuse.
